In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), menstruation is understood as a time when a woman naturally releases and loses Blood and Yin.
And Blood, in TCM, is much more than what we think it is!❣️
Blood is deeply nourishing. It moistens and supports the organs, skin, tissues, sinews and uterus, helps anchor the Shen, and provides an important foundation for a healthy hormonal cycle.
The Liver stores Blood, which makes Liver Blood particularly important for menstruation, fertility and overall women’s vitality.
Over time, repeated Blood and Yin loss, pregnancy, childbirth, emotional stress, overwork and excessive exercise can contribute to depletion of Qi and Blood, particularly when there isn’t enough nourishment, rest and recovery.
This may show up as things like:
🤍 dry skin and hair
🤍 brittle nails
🤍 hair loss
🤍 dry eyes or vaginal dryness
🤍 insomnia
🤍 hot flushes
🤍 low vitality
🤍 irregular menses
🤍 blood clots
And yet, so many women are living in a constant state of output! Working. Training. Caring. Creating. Mothering. Carrying the emotional load… Even while menstruating.
From a TCM perspective, the days during and after your period are therefore a beautiful opportunity to replenish what has been lost. Think warmth, slow-cooked and nourishing foods, rest, slowness, receiving, allowing others to take care of us.
Home-made bone broth, for example, has traditionally been used in TCM to support and replenish Qi, Blood and Essence (Jing), while providing important minerals and nutrients. Even better if you use bone marrow! I get mine from my local butcher.
Apart from diet, Acupuncture is one of the tools used in TCM to regulate the cycle, nourish Blood, tonify Qi, balance hormones, and help with all of the symptoms listed above. Women, men and children deserve a medical system and drugs that are clean, non-toxic and effective.
Your cycle isn’t asking you to give endlessly! Instead, it is inviting you to release, then replenish🌙
This is one of the themes we’ll explore at my Inner Seasons workshop, helping women understand their hormonal cycles, vitality and wellbeing through the lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine, by an experienced TCM practitioner, with a natural language we can connect with easily, as opposed to the Western medical jargon that doesn’t really speak to us and widens the gap between us and sovereignty. The Western medical system is configured in a way that you need a doctor to explain what is happening to you, you have been made reliant on an external figure who doesn’t know you nor can provide real care in a 10-minute appointment.
