What inspired me?

During my Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture degree studies at the Northern College of Acupuncture (NCA) York, we visited James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough, where they have a dedicated building, the Trinity Holistic Centre, where ear acupuncture is used to successfully help hormonal cancer patients reduce the side effects of the orthodox treatment, making it a great coadjuvant to conventional medicine for cancer patients. There is plenty of research and clinical evidence that proves that auricular acupuncture is effective for hot flashes, for both menopausal women and hormonal cancer patients, as well as for recovering addicts, depression, anxiety and insomnia sufferers. This is a great 15-year study on the effects of ear acupuncture on breast cancer survivors, take a look!

Through this experience and further observation of multi-bed acupuncture clinics as part of my training, I found that, when done in a group setting, the treatment had an added therapeutic value. I found the whole idea absolutely wonderful and I wanted to recreate something similar in York. Five years later, a new collaboration was born that allows us to bring group healing to you at reduced rates, at the hands of two experienced therapists with over 30 years combined knowledge and expertise in the field of healing arts and clinical holistic medicine.

Why Millers Yard in York?

I have known Dylan for many years as Millers Yard is where I set up my holistic health clinic in 2010. We have seen each other grow and expand. My clinic is now situated in The Shambles but what better place to run Sonic Pulse than the one that saw my beginnings as an independent practitioner. Millers Yard has a lovely, calming energy to it and it has been a sanctuary of healing for many years. It just made sense! It feels like I’ve come full circle and I am honoured to work with an experienced sound therapist like Dylan. We both resonate highly with Sonic Pulse and are excited to bring it to you.

Why 5 Elements style of acupuncture?

In these group sessions we work with the seasons of the year (Autumn, Winter, Spring, Summer and late Summer). Each season correspond to an Element (Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, Earth) and triggers specific adaptive processes in the body by activating the functions of specific organs in the body, depending on the season. A clear example is: Wood corresponds to the birth and growth of plants and trees in the Spring. Working with the natural cycles of Qi in nature and through our body, helps us maintain homeostasis in the body AKA optimum health.

How do we work with the Elements within the body?

There are different ways in which we can live a balanced life. These include mindful movement such as tai chi and qi gong, mindful breathing practices, eating seasonal and local as much as possible, acupuncture, healing sounds and more.

As Qi moves through the seasons and within us, our emotions move too. In fact, this information is highly valuable in complex cases; knowing which of my client’s emotions are most predominant or reoccurring in their daily lives, helps me grasp a better understanding of which Element/s and organ/s are out of balance and causing the symptoms, which helps me narrow down the diagnosis and provide a more effective, tailored treatment for them.

The Five Elements and Their Correlations
  • Wood: associated with spring, growth, birth of ideas and projects, the liver and gallbladder. Emotions if imbalanced: anger, envy, snappy temper, resentment, lack of courage, not knowing if you’re coming or going.

  • Fire: connected to summer, warmth, light-hearted energy, the heart, the small intestine and the Triple Warmer. Emotions if imbalanced: emotional flatness, a lack or an excess of joy, shut down or manic.

  • Earth: corresponds to late summer, nourishment, the spleen and stomach. Emotions if imbalanced: worry, overthinking, clouded head, unable to think straight.

  • Metal: linked to autumn, purification, renewal, the lungs and large intestine. Emotions if imbalanced: sadness, over-prolonged or stuck grief, a sense of disconnect or detachment from the world around us.

  • Water: relates to winter, cold, rest and retreat, the kidneys and urinary bladder. Emotions if imbalanced: fear, shyness, lack of will.

Why sound?

Ancient civilizations knew of the benefits of sound for therapy. The vibrations produced in a sound bath have been found to stimulate circulation, promote cellular regeneration and enhance the body’s natural healing processes. Receivers of sound therapy report feeling a sense of relaxation and calm, rejuvenation, reduced anxiety and improved sleep.

Sound baths also offer an opportunity to meditate and practice presence, skills that are highly valuable in the pressurised lives we lead in modern societies.

The most popular instruments used in sound baths are:

  • crystal bowls
  • Tibetan singing bowls
  • bells
  • gongs

Here are a few studies that prove the health benefits of sound baths for mental health:
